This line from a Flannery O’Connor story made me laugh out loud.
O’Connor’s description of Mrs. May is just too perfect. Don’t you love stories that showcase a character that we have all known? The character Mrs. May is that woman we all have known who has a high opinion of herself. She is a bit above everyone and never manages to look in the mirror.
In this scene, Mrs. May encounters a woman who is praying aloud. Upon hearing the praying woman utter the words “Dear Jesus,” Mrs. May has this reaction:
“Mrs. May winced. She thought the word, Jesus, should be kept inside the church building like other words inside the bedroom. She was a good Christian woman with a large respect for religion, though she did not, of course, believe any of it was true.”
There are more than a few Mrs. Mays in and around our community.
How I pray that we can reach them with God’s truth so that they will come to genuine belief.
