Bibliolatry?

Bibliolatry?

I’m reading Psalm 119 as homework for the spiritual disciplines class on Sunday nights.

We are a Bible Church where the Bible is always talked about.

Some people have wondered or asked – Do you worship God or do you worship a Bible?

Are you guilty of Bibliolatry?

In a church like this where the Bible is emphasized over and over are you missing the experience of the relationship with God?

I think this Psalm can answer that question for us.

It is not worship the Bible or worship God.

It is worship God.

Three words: We worship God.

Three questions:

How do we know who we are? How do we know what worship is? How do we know God?

We know God through His self revelation.

We know ourselves when His Spirit reveals the truth to us.

We know about the world and worship not merely by observation but by God’s revelation about what we have observed.

It is not love God or love the Bible.

We love God.

But how do we show our love for Him?

By treasuring His Word in our hearts and by keeping His commandments.

Look at verse two of Psalm 119.

How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart.

In keeping the law, one seeks the Lord.

That verse uses a parallelism to say one thing is equal to another thing.

Seeking God is the same as observing His Word.
