Don’t let it go over your head

Don’t let it go over your head

Consider this under Loving God with all your mind.

We have all heard something mentioned or recommended and then replied, “Oh that is over my head. That would be too difficult for me.”

Sometimes that may be true. It is fine to admit one’s ignorance. It is better to be honest than to fake knowledge that one does not actually have.

But there are times when we should say, “It may be a reach, but I am going to give it a try.” After all, the things you study and know and do today used to be over your head. But you grew.

Mortimer Adler, from his essay, “Invitation to the Pain of Learning”:

Whoever passes by what is over his head condemns his head to its present low altitude; for nothing can elevate a mind except what is over its head; and that elevation is not accomplished by capillary attraction, but only by the hard work of climbing up ropes, with sore hands and aching muscles.

Adler is correct about it being hard work.

But we have the best reason to put in the effort. Our God is beautiful beyond description. The joy that is ours as we know Him exceeds human capacities. If you are going to grow in your knowledge of Him you have to reach for it.

Don’t let it go over your head.
