good advice from mcheyne

These bits from the letters of Robert Murray Mchyene blessed me recently.

Written to a friend in trial…

I had told you that you needed trial, and now it is come. May you be exercised thereby, and come to that happy ‘afterwards’ of which the apostle speaks.

If only we saw the whole, we should see that the Father is doing little else in the world but training His vines. The divine husbandman prunes the branches that they might bear more fruit.

Written to Andrew Bonar during difficult times in the church…

If Satan drives you to your knees, he will soon find cause to regret it.

Do not think that you are forgotten by me as long as I have health and grace to pray. Remember, dear friend, how fathers do to their children when they ask bread. How much more shall our Heavenly Father give all good things to them that ask.

Spoken at minister’s meeting…

Let Christ increase. Let man decrease. If you lead sinners to yourself, and not to Christ, Immanuel will cast the star out of His right hand

I have found that I am never so successful as when I can lie at Christ’s feet, willing to be used or not as seemeth good in His sight.
