We had a great discussion in firm foundations class last night about getting into the Word of God every day.
Several people shared some best practices that have worked well in accomplishing this most important activity.
You have to have a fixed time like anything else that is important.
To fail to plan is to plan to fail.
When you are to meet a friend for lunch you talk with them ahead of time and put in on the schedule as to when and where. Shouldn’t we do as much for our meeting with God through His Word and prayer?
What if you place it on a schedule, and you mean to get it done, but you just keep missing it?
How to make sure you get it done.
Work toward discipline with the no food, no food rule.
No physical food unless and until I get my spiritual food.
Make a commitment that you will not have breakfast until you have taken in your four chapters.
If breakfast does not work you can make the same deal with yourself regarding lunch or dinner.
Use the cravings of your body to help your heart and soul accomplish what you know is most important.
Tons of printable bible reading plans are available at http://www.bibleplan.org
My favorite one is
The 19th Century Scottish minister, Robert Murray M’Cheyne who lived from 1813-1843, prepared a plan for Bible reading to take readers through the New Testament and Psalms twice a year, and through the rest of the Bible once each year.
D. A. Carson slightly modified this reading plan and published it in two or three volumes, along with his comments regarding each day’s scriptural passages. They are titled For the Lord of God and are available in hardback or paperback.
