The doctrine of election

The doctrine of election

I believe what the Bible says about election.

I worship God for the marvelous truths about election in Ephesians 1, 1 Peter 1, Romans 9 and many other places.

Having said all that, this too must be said.

I don’t trust in the doctrine of election. I trust in Christ.

I am not called to herald the doctrine of election but to preach Christ and Him crucified.

Keeping these things in proper perspective is helpful.

Getting them twisted and out or proportion is dangerous.

Someone may even say something like this:

“The Bible teaches only the elect will be saved. I don’t know if I am elect. I don’t know if I am saved.”

Someone may put off salvation with something like this:

“How can I come to Christ until I am sure that God has chosen me?”

I like the way Robert Murray M’Cheyne put it here:

“If you would say: ‘If I knew I was one of God’s elect, I would come to Christ; but I fear I am not.’ To you I answer: nobody ever came to Christ because he knew himself to be one of the elect. It is quite true that God has of His mere good pleasure elected some to everlasting life, but they never knew it until they believed in Christ. Christ nowhere commands the elect to come to him. He commands all men everywhere to repent and believe the gospel. The question for you is not, ‘Am I one of the elect?’ but ‘Am I a sinner?’ Christ came to save sinners.”
