So lately, I’m trying to use this space to supplement the teaching on prayer. And I am hoping that it has been helpful.
But I wanted to post something a little more personal today.
If you are only interested in the next prayer model – feel free to skip this.
I will continue the prayer stuff this evening.
But for those interested – here is what I did yesterday.
Normally we have elder’s meeting at 5.30am.
We didn’t have it on Tuesday – so I was able to read and pray a little longer at home.
Over Honey-nut Cheerios and Caribou coffee I read two chapters of Deuteronomy, two Psalms and a little bit of 1 Timothy.
I used 1 Timothy six to pray for myself, family, and other people.
9.00 Pastor’s meeting with John A., John M., Darien, Wayne and Dan.
In preparation for the meeting we had all read Horatius Bonar’s preface to “Accounts of Revival” where he describes nine characteristics of “Revival Men.”
Here are a couple of choice lines–
They were men of boldness and determination: “Timidity shuts many a door of usefulness and loses many a precious opportunity; it wins no friends, while it strengthens every enemy. Nothing is lost by boldness, nor gained by fear.”
They were men of prayer: “They were much alone with God, replenishing their own souls out of the living fountain, that out of them might flow to their people rivers of living water.”
10.30 Marriage mentoring meeting with Drew and Amy. At RBC we have joined mentor couples with younger couples to go through “When Sinners Say I Do” by Dave Harvey. It is a great marriage book and made even better by working through it in mentoring relationships. Drew and Amy are a great blessing to this congregation. It is pure joy for Amy and me to spend time with them.
12.30 Answered emails, returned phone calls and got some of the stuff done that other people were waiting for me to do.
1.30 Staff meeting with everyone in the office. Good time of sharing and prayer.
2.00 Wrote letters and made calls to a handful of people I know that are hurting. I wanted them to know that I love them, we pray for them, and Jesus will never, ever fail them.
3.00 Worked ahead a little and did some reading that may be related to the new sermon series I start in September.
When I walked through the front door in the afternoon something happened. This may sound like a small thing. But, to me, it isn’t. When I got home, Carly asked me “How was your day?” And then she stood waiting for an answer. She really wanted to know! What an undeserved grace of God in my life that I have a daughter who loves me and cares about me.
Took a jog before supper. Man was it hot!
After supper we played Cranium Whoonu. Fun game.
Made chocolate cookies with Reese’s peanut butter chips in them. Gooey. So good. (And yes, I do recognize that this probably counteracted the benefits of prior jog)
We watched a couple of episodes of the Cosby show on DVD.
Amy and I both used to watch it with our families back in the day (you know, the days before satellite, DVR, Tivo…) (you remember… the days when you had to get up, walk to the set to turn it on and watch whatever was on it?)
I don’t think our kids had ever seen it before. It cracked us up.
Went to bed thinking about Psalm 103.
The Lord had crowned me with loving-kindness and tender mercies
He has satisfied me with good things so that my youth is renewed as the eagle’s
Indeed the Lord is gracious and abounding in mercy.
